The organization was established in March 2011 as a social enterprise under The Salvation Army. It provides various sports programs to different public and private institutions, as well as individuals of different ages, with the aim of promoting and popularizing sports. At the same time, it operates based on the concept of social entrepreneurship, aiming to provide employment opportunities to marginalized communities such as middle-aged women, youth, and people with disabilities. It also encourages individuals in need to engage in physical activities to improve their physical and mental health.
Products and Services
According to statistics from the World Health Organization, 1 out of every 5 adults suffers from chronic pain. With the aging population in Hong Kong, a study conducted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2020 further revealed that approximately 90% of elderly individuals experience pain in two or more areas, and 40% of the elderly population troubled by pain exhibit mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety.
In light of this situation, The Salvation Army has received funding from the Vera Ruttonjee Desai Charitable Foundation and is collaborating with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University to implement a two-year program called the "The Salvation Army Vera Ruttonjee Desai Exercise Therapy Project." This project is based on evidence-based medicine and aims to provide various services to individuals aged 60 and above who are troubled by lower back pain and knee osteoarthritis, as well as their caregivers. These services include professional assessments, exercise classes, free lectures, individual counseling, home visits, and on-site instruction in simple home exercises. The program also seeks to recruit "Healthy Aging Ambassadors," volunteers aged 50 and above who are relatively healthy, to assist elderly individuals and caregivers with pain conditions through home visits and online exercise classes. The program will provide training in exercise techniques and volunteer allowances to these ambassadors, with the goal of offering comprehensive support to elderly individuals in need and establishing a support network.
